“GE is a waste of time”

Chuck on March 31st, 2008

Talking with some students today gave me a headache (how’s that for honesty?).  I am typically very patient and understanding with my students – especially when they don’t get something I’m saying.  I understand their thought processes for the most part, I get their stage of life…but for some reason today, I just got frustrated.

I have heard it over and over again from college-age people, “I don’t get the point of all my GE classes, it’s a waste of my time!”  Many students fall into this mentality, and it’s very concerning.

I was trying to get these students to see a few things…but I don’t think they got any of it.  I wanted them to see their education as preparation for missionary work.  I want them to grasp the fact that the more they know, the more impact they might have in their future workplace.  I want my students to view education as crucial to living out their faith, NOT as hoops they have to jump through to get a piece of paper (mostly to appease parents).

The part that frustrated me, which doesn’t normally, was they only wanted to focus on what they wanted to focus on…everything else was a waste of time.  That egocentric/selfish outlook really got to me today.

They were failing to see the bigger picture.  They were not seeing vocation (or life for that matter) through God’s desires, they were only seeing it from there’s.

I think the Bible calls that idolatry.

Packing Stinks

Chuck on March 29th, 2008

Well, I spent all day packing.  As many of you know we are moving up to Portland (from So. California) to plant a church.  It never ceases to amaze me how much stuff can be accumulated…and we are far from pack-rats!  I love to throw away stuff.  My thought is, “if you haven’t used it in the last year, throw it away!”  Of course we kept some pictures (funny ones too – I wasn’t the best looking kid!) and some yearbooks.

Wait, that statement about my looks insinuated that I now am good looking…an egocentric and narcissistic statement at least.  Whatever.

Bottom line is moving stinks and I’m tired!  I will spend tomorrow at church, pack some more, then back to the grind on Monday.  Whoa.

Oh, by the way, packing up your things really stinks.

Filming…

Chuck on March 26th, 2008

Just got finished filming for a new resource set to come out on the issue of identity.  Details of that will come, but I wanted to say a few things about my experience (some serious, and some not so much).   Here are a few pictures:Picture Onepicture 2picture three

  1.  I enjoyed the day – but it was VERY long!  We shot 4 short films…in one day.
  2. It felt very weird having make-up on all day.  We shot in HD which will be great for anyone who gets the thing, but apparently I have “deep black circles” under my eyes that don’t work too well with HD.
  3. During three different shots I had to use the restroom very badly, yet we didn’t have time for me to go!  Thankfully (due to my superior acting skills) I don’t think you will be able to tell which ones those were.
  4. I’m very excited about the content.
  5. It was good to hang out with Hunter.  He’s one of my favorite people in the world.  It’s a blessing to have him as a friend.
  6. I looked at some shots (unedited) today, and I’m officially my own worst critic!

Hello world!

Well, this is the first entry…of hopefully thousands! My desire is to keep you in tune with available and upcoming resources, trench work crashes and burns, successes, and trial and error ventures of others around the country.  Well, that sounded pretty formal and visionary so I don’t want to set myself up to completely fail.  It won’t all be so serious and certainly not so formal.  I’m an extremely funny guy – to prove this, in a book I just wrote the publisher asked my permission to have someone else add some “humor” to it.   Right.Anyway, here we go.  Glimpses into my daily life and discoveries…
