3 Tips To Getting On Campus

Chuck on August 24th, 2009

As part of our ministry at CollegeLeader we’re going to begin doing a few video blog/podcast/tip thing-a-majiggers (not sure how to write that out). With the school year coming up, I thought I’d issue a few thoughts for getting onto campus – especially for those of you who serve in a church-based ministry.  Here are 3 tips for getting on campus – in somewhat back door type ways…

Thanks for the ideas. I especially appreciated the scantron one. I appreciate that you’re trying the podcasting concept, and would certainly look forward to regularly downloading College Leader podcasts on to my ipod. If you pursue this further, here are my recommendations/requests as a listener:
1. I know video is chic right now, but audio is all I need, especially if the video doesn’t add content itself. Audio podcasts take less space on my nano, less battery, and since I listen to them while driving or walking the dog, I don’t look at the screen anyways.
2. Please be on iTunes. It’s not difficult, and is the only option for those of us who are sheep and use ipods (70% of the mp3 player market). A service like libsyn.com can make all of this very simple.
3. Keep the podcasts short. Not necessarily 5 minutes short, but less than 30.
4. Feel free to lean on interviews. I would love to hear from various College Leader mentors on their experiences on things like all-church staff dynamics, interacting with parachurch ministries, how to handle tension between home-grown college students and “invading” relocating college students, semester and quarter cycles, what to do if students don’t like ‘big church’, how to handle not being the cool church in town, how to handle the 25 year old who doesn’t want to leave the group but isn’t competent to be a leader. Okay, I’m rambling.
5. Learn from great ministry podcasts. Catalyst, Simply Youth Ministry, IX Marks, Andy Stanley Leadership Podcast, and Rick Warren’s ministry podcast (no longer being updated) are some of my favorites.

Hope that helps. If College Leader did something like this on a regular basis, I would be hugely appreciative.
