I saw this on ABC News tonight. It is scary to think that 70+% of people have “faith” in something that they don’t believe to be uniquely true. Is that really faith?

I love what Eugene Rivers says about Americans being theologically illiterate, and as a result holding contradictory views because they haven’t thought deeply about their faith tradition. What is it that you used to say at Axis? Don’t take my word for it…don’t believe it because I said it…study it…figure it out for yourself.

It looks like we’ve got some work to do!

When people say they have a certain “faith”, it rarely means they actually have a true faith in anything anymore. It’s why I find it more accurate to call myself a follower of Christ when talking about my beliefs, rather than saying I’m a Christian. “Christian” or, even more so, “Jewish” has become a label for a heritage, not a true label of someone who actually believes the tenants of these religions. “Christians” are associated with hypocrisy and judgment, sadly enough. As a “follower of Christ”, I hope I can be associated directly with Christ Himself.

And I agree with Eugene Rivers – people are not educated one iota about the history behind religions or the true beliefs that each faith holds. It seems to me people in America are too comfortable in their lives here on earth to think about what happens to them later.

Thanks Chuck. This was a good motivator.
